The Lodge at a Glance

Camp Jabulani’s classic and elegant interiors seamlessly blend with the rugged African bushveld, providing a warmth and comfort that makes our guests feel completely at home.
The rich textures of organic elements create a harmonious and pleasing balance between ‘designer’ and ‘authentic’ – grass-pressed mud walls, stone floors and thatched roofs are but some of the natural features guests may expect to find.
An open flow of light and air allow for a communion with the African bush without forsaking optimum comfort. Rich woods, crystal glasses and silver service somehow seamlessly blend into an experience of genuine hospitality and sensory indulgence.
This standout among safari lodges South Africa is built along the bank of a seasonal stream. An open-plan dining room and lounge merge with the wooden deck which lies in the shade of gigantic Leadwood trees, around which the main facility was constructed. An impressive suspension bridge connects the living areas with the suites, which lie scattered beyond the river bed.
The sole objective of the team of professionally skilled and personable staff is to meet the needs of their valued guests. To indulge, spoil, pamper and entertain, but most importantly – to share with them the story and the experience of the elephants.

The Suites

Each of Camp Jabulani’s six luxury suites is exquisite, remote and private...
Tucked within the dense foliage along a dry river bed, each safari suite is an oasis of opulent serenity. Massive wooden sliding doors open to interiors which are a pure translation of style, comfort, elegance and an understated appreciation of the natural environment.

The Wildlife

Camp Jabulani is based on Kapama, a Big 5 Private Game Reserve near the Kruger National Park

The lush vegetation and varied habitats of this balanced ecosystem means that it is able to support dense populations of wild animals, offering world class game viewing opportunities.
A true African Big five safari experience, visitors will enjoy herds of antelope, giraffe and zebra grazing and congregating at the many waterholes, their senses alert to the threat of a hunting predator in the area. Kapama has five separate prides of lions and we have frequent sightings of leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena as well as other smaller carnivores. Prepare to be humbled by the size and power of the elephant, buffalo and rhinoceros.
Bird-lovers will find their Mecca here, as more than 350 bird species have been recorded, including the endangered Ground hornbills,  Lappet-faced vultures and the rare African finfoot.
Kapama’s animals have learned not to feel threatened by our open sided vehicles, allowing for close-up photographic opportunities. We also strictly limit the number of guests on each Land Rover so that you have unobstructed views.
What makes Camp Jabulani a standalone destination is the fact that we offer you the best of both worlds… a top Big Five safari experience and a one of a kind Elephant experience.
The Jabulani Elephant Experience is the only of its kind, where guests get to interact closely and very personally with a semi-captive herd in a natural Big Five reserve.  Highlights of the experience include meeting the elephants close up and hearing their stories; watching playful splashing and spraying during the midday swim; tracking the herd on foot in their own territory, and participating in field research
Beyond being a life-changing experience, guests also contribute to the survival of the herd and ensure the sustainability and well-being of the elephants.

Safaris

Identify the call of a bird; follow the bark of a baboon or the roar of a lion in the midst of their natural environment.
Guests are able to join experienced rangers in open safari vehicles as they head out in search of The Big 5, and the smaller (but no less significant) creatures that are part of an African Safari.
Camp Jabulani’s rangers are consummate professionals. Highly experienced in guiding in the African bush, they are the perfect big five safari ambassadors while out in the bush.
Guests can expect close encounters with animals in the wild – the stuff that movies are made of. Avid photographers, both amateur and professional, will never find their viewfinder empty and can expect to return home with incredible safari memories captured forever.
Safaris may be arranged at any time of the day. A word of warning though…. the summer months are incredibly hot in the middle of the day! This time is best enjoyed around the cool respite of a private plunge pool with a chilled G & T in hand.

The Reserve

Covering approximately 16 000 hectares of prime big game territory, Kapama Private Game Reserve has succeeded in combining the wilderness of the bush with the comforts of five-star hospitality and facilities.
Kapama Private Game Reserve (Hoedspruit, Limpopo) was proclaimed a private game reserve in December 1993.  The name comes from ‘Kapama’, a Swazi king whose tribe inhabited and hunted in the northern Drakensberg mountain region around Mariepskop back in the 1880s.
A game relocation programme was introduced, and the Game Reserve now supports a wide variety of game including elephant, buffalo, rhinoceros, and large populations of giraffe, impala, blue wildebeest and kudu. Predators include lion, leopard, cheetah, spotted hyena and many smaller species. Bird-watching is most rewarding on the reserve and more than 350 bird species have been recorded, including the rare Gymnogene and Knob-billed duck.
The vegetation is typical of the lowveld: mixed woodland, which is dominated by a variety of acacia and bushwillow species, but also includes tamboti, marula, silver cluster leaf and jackalberry.
Game viewing during the hot summer months (October to April) is more comfortable in the early mornings and late afternoon when it is cooler. Late afternoon rain showers are not uncommon.
Camp Jabulani vehicles depart into the reserve each day, and in the company of the experienced rangers, visitors are transported on safari into a wild, natural world where animals take precedence and humans are left to observe as nature takes its course as it has done for thousands of years.

The Jabulani Herd

Meet the Camp Jabulani elephants. The herd has matured over time to become a very close-knit family group. Each elephant has its own character and shares a unique bond with the rest of the group.
Six babies have joined the Camp Jabulani herd since 2006, and the intra-herd dynamics have changed significantly since. While wild elephants group themselves in matriarchal herds – with male bull elephants joining the herds from time to time and having little to do with the younger members – each and every member of Camp Jabulani’s herd, both male and female, is an integral part of the very cohesive family.

Foster an Elephant

The cost to take care of an elephant

It’s an expensive exercise taking care of an elephant. Food, veterinary care, housing and human resources all amount to approximately R30,000.00 per elephant per month. This cost is fixed, regardless of visitor numbers.

Why foster an elephant

Following the extraordinary interactions they have enjoyed, so many of our guests have expressed an interest in fostering one of the Camp Jabulani elephants. We have therefore made available various fostering options for the younger elephants of the herd. These elephants will never be utilised for elephant back safaris, although the expense for their care is still absorbed as part of the operation

What you get as a foster parent

With each fostering you will receive the following:

  • A certificate acknowledging your sponsorship.
  • Quarterly updates with news and images.
  • The knowledge that you are contributing to a very special animal’s survival.
