Lion Sands River Lodge

River Lodge - You are home.

River Lodge is the origin of the Lion Sands safari – the elemental safari. Here guests can expect a sophisticated interpretation of the traditional safari lodge, with an emphasis on clean lines, optimised natural light and contemporary décor.

Living spaces include a Safari Lounge and Bar; Barista’s Station with artisanal coffees; Gallery (showcasing the works of renowned local artists); and OneLife MORE boutique.

The dining experience includes the traditional Boma ‘with a twist’; the signature Riverbed dinners and deck dining, in the shade of the trees and overlooking the Sabie River. Breakfast is a home-styled experience.

Lodge facilities include: a main swimming pool area; a ‘Memory Lab’, where guests are able to print their photographs on canvas; and a Firepit for sociable nocturnal gatherings beneath the stars. River Lodge’s accommodation comprises 8 Luxury Rooms, 6 Superior Luxury Rooms and 4 River Suites (each with its own plunge pool). One of the River Suites has 2 bedrooms.

On Safari

The safaris take place either in the morning or late afternoon moving into the early evening. The reason for this is that it is when the wildlife are most active due to the temperatures being the most moderate. It is also important to note that this area does not get affected by a migration of species which means that the game viewing is consistently good all year round and the only change in seasons is really to the surrounding landscape and daily temperatures.

Fitness & Exercise

Although you are outdoors a large portion of the day one does not have the opportunity to do any strenuous exercise such as running as in this environment runners would be too great a temptation for all of those very opportunistic predators! Although we do offer some incredible wildlife walks we have created a workout gym for those of you who like to get in a little more of a workout to keep in shape.

Africology Wellness

The Spa at Lion Sands is a Tranquil retreat, realigning your body with nature, and its connectedness to the divine. Our focus is on cutting edge spa therapies where holisms are embraced. Bespoke in our approach - we listen to you and your body’s need and guide accordingly Never neglecting our sense of luxury & opulence, we continue to respect our environment.

Weddings

We have hosted both intimate and larger safari weddings at our private lodges, so we know what a memorable setting they can be for that special occasion. If you are considering getting married with us, please make contact so that we can start planning and tailoring the event early, as we know that each occasion is unique in its requirements. You can either come meet with us at the lodge, or we can communicate via telephone to start sculpting the perfect program of events for your consideration.

Honeymoon

Follow your heart to the bush. Whether it’s your first breakaway as a couple or your second honeymoon, you want it to be an unforgettable experience. Romantic, idyllic, private and secluded – Lion Sands, out of all our Lodges, must be the most idyllic setting to celebrate the start of a new life together or to fall in love all over again. The suites are private, spacious, luxurious, have incredible vistas over the river so game viewing or just being together can be done from your own viewing deck, they have outdoor showers and their own private plunge pools, a complete haven to just be.

River Lodge is the Eden of the More children’s youth and first Lion Sands lodge to welcome guests, who between visits have married, become parents, and whose children have grown and now come to stay. And we have watched the lodge grow up, too. It recently reopened after an extensive renovation, with 18 rooms and open guest areas that have introduced a new sense of brightness and space. This is where lovers and families come together and share extraordinary experiences.

River Lodge welcomes children 10 years and older

With eight Luxury Rooms, six Superior Luxury Rooms, and four River Suites including a Family Suite, it’s for you to choose which best suits you – but the extraordinary view comes standard. Wooden walkways lead off to a spa, gym and pool, and back to the main lodge, where the deck’s connected water features give the impression of floating on the river. Whether you enjoy your time together socially or quietly in the bar, restaurant, Gallery or firepit lounge, the running theme here is luxury living.

A Closer Look

  • Our Mack & Madi kids’ programme surprises and delights young explorers – and keeps them out of mischief
  • Dining – from pop-up bush breakfasts to riverbed dinners, and lunch feasts in between – is as anticipated as the safaris
  • For our Jewish guests, we offer kosher cuisine, freshly prepared on-site in a separate kitchen
  • Wine pairings elevate each meal – our collection favours renowned Cape producers and its lesser-known estates, adding to your sense of discovery

As a guest of River Lodge, you have the option of elevating your safari to a million-star experience with a night in our Chalkley or Kingston Treehouse.

Lodges

River Lodge’s Family River Suite includes a second children’s en-suite bedroom, laid out with their own amenities, to give children (and their parents) their own space.

Couples

African safaris are known for starting – and rekindling – romances, and many couples come to us looking for the space to be together, as well as freedom to enjoy their own interests. You won’t find our lodges teeming with other guests, so finding some alone time in the spa or animal hide won’t be a problem.

And our attentive service means there’s nothing to stop you enjoying breakfast on your viewing deck, while your partner indulges their passion for wildlife photography in the Creative Lab. You can happily meet up for the afternoon game drive and dial up the mood with a night in a Treehouse…

Lion Sands’ four lodges are made available to give you as much privacy as you wish, while at the same time looking after your every need. Ivory Lodge Villas are the most exclusive – individual in every way. River Lodge, with its many open guest areas, has the ambiance of an informal dinner party. While Tinga and Narina Lodges strike a good balance between convivial and tranquil. But all assure five-star service and trimmings, with the added delight of exploring a completely different way of life, together.

Honeymooner

Rather than the dress, tux, cake, flowers… it is the memories made together that will last a lifetime – and there are few experiences more unforgettable than your safari honeymoon. This is all the motivation we need to help you get it exactly right: combining incomparable luxury with authentic adventure, setting the rhythm between relaxing and exploring. Between spa journeys for two and private game drives, we fill your experience with surprises you didn’t know existed… Hint: arriving to dinner in the light of only lanterns and stars. You can trust our obsession with the details to make it magical.

Stay

Here, you get to escape relentless planning and finally be together, just the two of you, in the most exotic, tranquil destination. At Lion Sands, you can sleep out in a Treehouse beneath nothing but the Milky Way one night, and in a private Villa between bushveld and river the next. You’ll have all the trappings of the finest hotels, but somewhere altogether more wild and wonder-full.

Safaris

A safari is a sociable experience by its very nature. Guests from all backgrounds tend to mix easily when you inevitably end up in friendly competition to spot an animal first and share the thrill when you do. But you also have the option of a private guide and vehicle if you prefer the freedom to set your own pace and decide what you’d like to focus on.

The Wild Life

Africa has been called the greatest show on earth, and Lion Sands presents a safari that plays out like a highlights reel. Our reserve conserves 5 000ha (12 500ac) of a habitat that is home to the highest and most diverse concentration of wildlife in the southern hemisphere. You will see all of Africa’s iconic species – lion leopard, rhino, elephant, buffalo, giraffe, hippo, and zebra – along with a supporting cast of no less intriguing 137 mammal species and over 450 varieties of bird. Our safaris present an adventure that is wild, and then some!

An Exclusive Experience

Being entirely private, Lion Sands offers you an intimate safari experience. With only six guests to a game viewer and exclusive traversing on our reserve, you’ll have minimal encounters with other people. Though compelling sightings do attract more attention, the number of vehicles here is also limited. This ensures the animals aren’t put under stress and you are able to spend more time with them, observing their natural behaviour. While you are out exploring, you will by no means be roughing it. Your game viewer has cushioned bucket seats, waterproof device holders, blankets and ponchos – and stops off in a scenic spot for drinks and snacks.

Safari Stops

As one of Lion Sands’ many tailor-made experiences, our safari stops are something truly special. Between the action, they are pauses to simply appreciate being in the bush and in the moment. An exciting morning breaks for hot beverages – with sneaky tots of Amarula liqueur, if you like – and freshly-baked treats, as the animals begin to stir. Your afternoon winds down with sundowners and nibbles in a surprise location, which your field guide has found to show off what is possibly the day’s most epic event – an African sunset.

Your MORE Guides

Our safaris bring you face-to-face with the natural world, but what would they be without your field guide and tracker who know how to heighten the thrill of the search? All are FGASA-qualified (some by our own NJ MORE Field Guide College), and highly-skilled at leading safaris in Big Five territories and tailoring them to your personal interests. But more than that, they are selected for their palpable love of the world’s last wild places and their ability to inspire this in you – putting them in a league of their own. They are your scouts, teachers, translators and – given how much time you spend with them – friends, so your affinity with your guiding team is essential.

Walking Safaris

These are our after-breakfast walks on the wild side. For those who wish to experience the bush, not just observe it, there is no better guided excursion. You are dropped in the thick of things and all five senses engage… Feel the scrub crunch beneath your feet, touch a velvety acacia seed pod, hear the crack of a branch indicating you are not alone, and spot the game appear just metres off – exhilarating! This is also a wonderful opportunity to encounter the smaller creatures, often missed on safari vehicles, and to discover more about the reserve’s plants – many with fascinating medicinal properties and traditional uses.

The Best of Both Worlds

Lion Sands Game Reserve is unique, being the only private sanctuary rooted in both the Sabi Sand Game Reserve and Kruger National Park. The 50km (31mi) border between these great wildernesses is unfenced, and only the Sabie River separates our Sabi and Kruger regions. The wildlife roams freely between them, and at Lion Sands we see the passage of an unparalleled number and diversity of species. They are non-migratory, so you are guaranteed an exceptional safari, year-round – influenced by season, rather than location. Autumn and winter are best for spotting game though the sparse bush, and spring and summer for seeing newborns and exotic bird species. Our reserve is also renowned for the quality of its leopard viewing – the most elusive of predators.

An African Safari – just its mention inspires something-out-of-a-movie imaginings – sets the scene for any number of experiences to play out. From weddings with elephants on the guest list, to photography expeditions that take you within a hair’s breadth of the wildlife – whatever your special interest or request, we will create a bespoke safari for you to realise your own dream.

Of course this includes luxury accommodation in a captivating location, sincere and attentive hospitality and excellent food, all wrapped up by seamless logistics. And with our years of experience, you can trust us to pull it off.

Weddings

The magic of this immemorial land cannot be underestimated when the matters at hand are love and devotion. Embark on the adventure of a lifetime and celebrate your union where forever began. We will plan your secret elopement/ intimate nuptials/roaring celebration – down to the last wildly-romantic detail. This leaves you with time to focus on each other, spend with family and friends, and take it all in…

Bird Watching

Your FGASA-accredited field guide has a vast knowledge of the reserve and its inhabitants, and will gladly tailor a safari to your birding interest. South Africa’s resident species number over 850 and with Lion Sands home to 450 of those, including the rare southern ground hornbill, the birdwatching here is spectacular! And there’s always a spare pair of binocs on the vehicle, so no need to panic if you’ve left yours behind.

Photography

We understand that photographers need time and independence, and our safaris offering exclusive traversing across the reserve are ideal. Your experienced field guide will get you up close for the perfect shot and the vehicle caters for your interest, too with bucket seats and compartments for your equipment. Back at River Lodge, the Creative Lab is available for you to edit and print your work onto canvas.

Spa & Wellness

In our experience, being well taken care of inspires a fundamental sense of well-being. And how better to indulge than with luxurious accommodation, wholesome food, and spa therapies? We favour Africology products, instilled with the belief that self-care brings balance. So with our massages, wraps and facials, we promise a wellness experience to rejuvenate your body, quiet your mind, and revitalise your spirit.

Food & Wine

From boma feasts to safari refreshment stops, dining promises to be a highlight – for all our guests, with any dietary requirement, including kosher, catered for. Our chefs transform local recipes into contemporary dishes, giving you a taste for Southern Africa. Paired with premium wines from the Cape, dining becomes an experience. Our wine tastings are also a favourite of connoisseurs and dabblers, alike.
