Kapama Private Game Reserve occupies a vast area between the northern Drakensberg mountains and the Greater Kruger National Park, in the north-east of South Africa. It spans 13 000 hectares of the magnificent South African bushveld, teeming with wildlife, yet is ideally situated to receive fly-in guests of scheduled flights from the nearby Eastgate Airport in Hoedspruit.
The best airport to fly into is Eastgate Airport, also know as Hoedspruit Airport, as it is just 10 minutes’ drive from the reserve entrance, and Kapama offers complimentary transfers in open game viewing vehicles directly to any of the four luxury game lodges on the reserve: River Lodge, Buffalo Camp, Kapama Karula and Southern Camp.
Should a travel itinerary include Hendrik van Eck Airport or Kruger Mphumalanga International Airport, guests will need to arrange a private transfer in order to get to Kapama Private Game Reserve. That is why Eastgate / Hoedspruit Airport is highly recommened.
Situated in Limpopo province, an area renowned for its wildlife and superb safari destinations, Kapama Private Game Reserve is home to all the big game of Africa, with over 40 mammal species and 350 bird species. This equates to huge natural diversity and includes the famed dangerous Big Five of lion, leopard, elephant, buffalo and rhino. Twice-daily game drives are conducted through the rolling savannah grasslands and riverine forests that make up this magnificent African reserve.
The African camp atmosphere is perpetuated at mealtimes with serve-yourself choices presented in heavy African cooking pots over a gentle flame. Hot and cold breakfast and lunch options are spread out across the servery, while dinner is prepared in the kitchen or cooked on the grill and served around an open fire in the circular traditional outdoor boma.
Buffalo Camp has a cosy lounge on the edge of the riverbank under a vaulted thatch with ceiling fans to help the air flow. The Buffalo Bar serves drinks all day and into the night until the last guest turns in. Upholstered chairs and sofas offer a restful place to sit and listen to birds in the surrounding trees.
Buffalo Camp’s pool terrace is small and intimate like the rest of the lodge. Big enough for a dip rather than a swim, this is the best place to cool off and rest under sun umbrellas on a hot African afternoon.
Kapama Game Reserve is so well positioned, not too far from habitation but still deep in the bush, enabling us to offer a truly superior range of activities. Two game drives per day and an optional bush walk is included in the all-inclusive Kapama safari package. All other activities are not included and will charged as extras.
Here’s a quick guide to what’s on offer, then read on for all the exciting details of each option:
- Game Drives and Bush Walks
- Romantic Sleepout
- Kapama Body & Skin Treatments
- Hot Air Ballooning
- Elephant Back Safari
- Kapama Thulumahashe Children’s Home
- Hoedspruit Centre for Endangered Species
- Private Dining
- Golf at Hans Merenski Championship Course
Two game drives a day are offered to all our guests. Accompanied by a skilled ranger and tracker, you can expect to encounter a diverse range of animal and bird species. Since this is a Big Five reserve, encountering lion, leopard, elephant, rhino and buffalo is possible over a two-day safari.
While seeing big game is always exhilarating, there are many other smaller species that are also captivating, and birding enthusiasts will be delighted at the approximately 350 species of bird recorded on the reserve. Throughout the day, it’s likely you will see wildlife such as nyala antelope, Vervet monkeys or even a few of the Big Five.
