FROM THE KITCHEN

Meal times at Arathusa are a sociable affair, and guests are treated to sumptuous dishes, fresh produce and daily baked confectionery from our kitchen.

South Africa is renowned for its fresh produce – our fruits and vegetables are a primary export to international regions all over the world, and our meat, venison and poultry are first class.

Before departing on your morning safari, you will be offered coffee, tea and biscotti and rusks. While out in the bush, you will stop for a refreshment break of coffee or tea, with freshly baked baby muffins, rusks and oatmeal crunchies, to tide you over till breakfast!

Breakfast is a choice of a continental breakfast – with fresh fruit, cereals, yoghurts, cheese & cold meats selection, or a hot breakfast to order.

Lunch is kept light and healthy, and guests have a choice of three dishes: a healthy fresh salad, a fish course or a red meat dish.

Freshly baked cakes, tarts and fruit is served at High Tea prior to your afternoon game drive.

For sundowners during your afternoon drive, orders for your drink* of choice are taken at lunchtime, and snacks – including biltong (dried, cured meat, similiar to beef jerky), pastries, dried fruit, nuts and mini pies – are on offer.

When it comes to dinner, we pride ourselves on never dining at the same place twice during our guest’s stay. We have an outdoor boma (traditionally an enclosure for livestock – Swahili or Afrikaans), where we serve traditional South African potjie dishes (a traditional South African meal cooked in a round, cast iron, three-legged pot). We also do fine dining at the lodge, where the chefs employ their creative flair with local fresh produce, and serve guests a stunning four-course meal.

The kitchen prides itself on being able to cater to any and all dietary requirements of our guests. We have reputable suppliers that can get us any special ingredients that we may need to create the perfect dish for anyone.

Arathusa also offers a range of superior South African wines*, produced in the Cape by well respected farms and estates.

The Wildlife

As part of the Sabi Sand Reserve and greater Kruger National Park, Arathusa is located in one of the world’s most abundant natural wilderness areas where hundreds of animal species roam free – including the much acclaimed Big Five (lion, leopard, rhino, elephant and buffalo – the five most dangerous animal species to be hunted on foot). Leopards, in specific, are abundant in this region with perhaps the globe’s highest population.

Arathusa prides itself on its leopard viewing. As these elusive cats are territorial, their regular appearance in the area enables us to plot their movements, and to observe their behaviour. Many of the animals become familiar and are easily recognised. Approximately 14 leopards are seen in the area in which Arathusa operates, six of which are seen on a regular basis.

The Rangers

The most notable trait of the staff at Arathusa Safari lodge is that they love what they do. The rangers and trackers proudly transport visitors into another world, where the language is in the sound and rhythm of the bush. They are full of entertaining anecdotes, interesting bits of information and an infectious passion and enthusiasm. They are experts out in the field, and are the finishing touch to the fine quality of the Arathusa safari experience.

There are thirteen Suites, nine of which face the (now-dry) waterhole* in front of the lodge,  and four of which are remotely located within the bush a short distance from the lodge.

*Despite the devastating drought in the region over the last two years having affected the amount of water in Arathusa’s signature waterhole, vast amounts of game still gather on the open plains. We are eagerly anticipating the rains which will hopefully restore the waterhole to its former aquatic glory enjoyed since 1983.

Each Suite is uniquely designed, with fresh interiors and a focus on light and space. Each has a bathroom en-suite, with shower, as well as a private outdoor shower and verandah. Amenities include a mini bar (stocked with a selection of beverages on request), an electronic safe, hairdryer, air conditioning, direct-dial telephone, mosquito net and tea/ coffee making facilities.

Each of the four remote Suites also has its own plunge pool, and affords guests the ultimate privacy.

In keeping with the traditional and natural safari experience, there are no televisions in the Suites at Arathusa. Guests are, however, able to connect to wi-fi in the public areas and in reception.
