Umlani Bushcamp in Timbavati accommodates guests in traditional African reed and thatch huts as well as an Eco Rondavel, which all blend naturally with the environment and provide pure comfort.

All accommodation options have en-suite facilities including open-air bush showers for the ultimate stargazing experience.  They also offer comfortable beds, crisp white linen, soft towels, mosquito netting, insect repellent and standard bathroom amenities. There is also complimentary bottled water, although the tap water is perfectly safe to drink. 

Double Huts




The four double huts come with double beds, en-suite facilities including an open-air bush shower. Comfortably-fitted with white mosquito nets, crisp white linen and towels as well as with standard bathroom amenities, the huts also have bottled water (although the tap water is perfectly safe to drink) and insect repellent. A maximum of  of two guests.

Family Huts



The four family huts each come with a double and two single beds, en-suite facilities including an open-air bush shower. The huts are comfortably fitted with white mosquito nets, crisp white linen and towels as well as with standard bathroom amenities, bottled water (although the tap water is perfectly safe to drink) and insect repellent. Each family hut can accommodate a maximum of four guests.

Eco Hut



Built to enhance thermal storage qualities, it is lovely and warm when cold outside and much cooler when hot outside. Same “close to nature” experience with outdoor shower and bathroom but with little extra luxuries. Two guests can be accommodated in the Eco Rondavel.



We advise you plan carefully so you do not miss out on the Umlani game drives and bush walks, but rather take part in these out side activities upon arriving or leaving Umlani, or if your stay is longer than three nights.
Apart from the wildlife safaris there are some optional daytime activities outside the Timbavati Game Reserve that are accessible from Umlani Bushcamp; these can be arranged by camp management. A transfer service can also be organised to and from the Umlani Bushcamp to any of the following activities:

Near-by Golf Courses
Hans Merensky Golf Course - A world famous course set in a unique bushveld atmosphere. Share a golfing experience with resident giraffe, hippo, crocodiles and many other permanent residents! The 18 hole, Bob Grimsdell designed, Par 72, Championship Golf course has been voted as the best walking course in the country. This golf course is situated an approx 1h 45min drive from Umlani in Phalaborwa. Transfers to/from will need to be arranged.
Drakensig Golf Course - A smaller 9 hole golf course. It is located at the Air force Base in Hoedspruit, a 45min drive from Umlani. Transfers to/from will need to be arranged.


 

Birding in the Kruger Park

With 13 varied habitats, Kruger National Park is home to one of the largest concentrations of birdlife and game species in Africa. Birding in the Kruger Park is a major draw card for all eco-tourists as it is reputed as being the finest birding location in Southern Africa.

Birding in the Kruger Park can expose keen birdwatchers to over 500 species but is best known for its large raptor species.

Wake-up call 5am in summer & 5:30am in winter.

Coffee, tea and muffins or pancakes in the bar in summer and in the boma in winter.

Bush walk and/or game drive departs at 5:30am in summer & 6am in winter.

Return to camp for breakfast at approximately 9:00am in summer & 9:30am in winter.

Relax through the midday hours around the pool, in hammocks, in the bar, or at the tree house overlooking Marco’s dam.

Light lunch in the bar at 1:30pm

Game drive departs at 4pm in summer & 3:30pm in winter.

While this programme serves as a general routine, it is flexible.

Mealtimes can sometimes vary when weather or extraordinary sightings on game drives merit this.


Driving to Umlani Bushcamp

  • The direct route when driving to Umlani Bushcamp from Gauteng will take safari travellers approximately 5 hours.
  • If driving to Umlani Bushcamp from Pretoria, take the N4 from Pretoria to eMalahleni (Witbank), which then joins the N12 from Johannesburg at eMalahleni (Witbank).
  • If driving to Umlani Bushcamp from Johannesburg, take the N12 from Johannesburg to eMalahleni (Witbank), which then joins the N4 from Pretoria at eMalahleni (Witbank).
  • Travel past eMalahleni (Witbank)and Middelburg on the N4 (main route to Mbombela (Nelspruit) and Maputo).
  • After Middelburg take the Belfast turnoff off the N4 (there is an Engen One Stop on the RHS of the N4 just after the offramp).
  • Turn left from the offramp and continue into Belfast.
  • Continue through 1 stop sign before going into town.
  • At the second stop sign in town (1 block after the Spar shop on the LHS), turn right towards Dullstroom.
  • Travel for approx. 35km from Belfast to Dullstroom.
  • Continue straight through Dullstroom to Mashising (Lydenburg) (approximately 50km from Dullstroom).
  • On reaching Mashising (Lydenburg), you will come to a T-junction where you need to turn left to go through town.
  • Continue straight through town, past the Wimpy on the left.
  • At the next stop sign after the Wimpy turn left.
  • Continue down to the second stop sign. At the second stop sign turn right toward Ohrigstad.
  • Travel approx. 50km from Mashising (Lydenburg) to Ohrigstad.
  • Continue straight through Ohrigstad and on to the JG Strijdom Tunnel via the Abel Erasmus Pass (approximately 40km from Ohrigstad).
  • After the Tunnel continue straight on to Hoedspruit (approximately 40km from the tunnel).
  • On entering Hoedspruit, go straight over the first stop sign, straight at the second stop sign, over the railway bridge and at the third stop sign turn right.
  • Travel for approximately 7km from Hoedspruit and you will see a number of signs for lodges, as well as a sign for Eastgate Airport, to the left.
  • Turn left towards Eastgate Airport, and you are on the road into the Timbavati Nature Reserve.
  • Travel along the Timbavati Road past the Hoedspruit/ Eastgate Airport on the left hand side.
  • Approximately 10 minutes after the Airport you will arrive at the Timbavati Gate (R120 for issue of permit p/vehicle)
  • Once through the main gate continue along the tar road and cross the Klaserie River.
  • Once through the Timbavati Gate look out for the UMLANI sign (+/- 8.5 km ) on your left on a large concrete block.
  • At that point, turn right onto the small bush road & follow the small wooden UMLANI signs to the camp.

 

Directions from Johannesburg to Umlani

  • Get onto the N4 towards Witbank (Emalahleni) - N4 highway is also the highway/main road to Nelspruit (Mbombela) & Maputu
  • Toll Road
  • Take left off ramp to Belfast
  • Pass through the small town of Belfast and follow road signs turning right onto the R540 to Dullstroom
  • Follow the signs on R540 to Lydenburg/Mashishing
  • At the T-junction, outside Lydenburg/Mashishing turn left
  • Pass through the town of Lydenburg/Mashishing and follow the road signs, turning left, onto the R36 towards Ohrigstad
  • Pass through the town of Ohrigstad, still on the R36
  • Continue on the R36 towards the Strydom Tunnel
  • Pass through the mountainous region and the Strydom Tunnel - this road will lead you into Hoedspruit
  • Pass through the small town of Hoedspruit and at the 2nd four way stop turn right onto the R40 towards Klaserie and Acornhoek
  • Leave the town of Hoedspruit and after 6km turn left onto the Timbavati Road (lots of Game Lodge Signs) and Eastgate/Hoedspruit airport sign.
  • Travel for 17,8km along the Timbavati Road until you reach the Timbavati Gate You will pass the Eastgate/ Hoedspruit Airport on your left hand side
  • On arrival at the Timbavati Gate please pay R140 for issue of permit p/vehicle.
  • Once through the Timbavati gate continue along the tar road for 13,7 kms
  • First plate shows 4.8km straight
  • 600 meters further you will find another road marker showing Umlani right, 4.2km.
  • Here you will also notice a prominent tree with three nests right at the turn off.
  • On the left hand side of the road you will see a round cement road maker with lodge names on it. Turn right directly opposite onto a dirt road.
  • Follow the small wooden signs "UMLANI"
  • Please be on the look-out when you go through a dip/dry riverbed for the Umlani wooden sign that directs you to turn right to camp.
  • There are 3 wooden signs in total.


Timbavati Gate to Umlani

  • On arrival at the Timbavati Gate please pay R140 for issue of permit p/vehicle.
  • Once through the Timbavati gate continue along the tar road for 13,7 kms
  • First plate shows 4.8km straight
  • 600 meters further you will find another road marker showing Umlani right, 4.2km.

Directions from Kruger National Park to Umlani

  • Please note that you would have to exit the park at ORPEN GATE. There are no public roads from within Kruger National Park to the Timbavati Private Game Reserve, only private/restricted roads so please do not try and use your GPS as it will take you on roads which are not accessible for guests or normal motor vehicles and will cause major delays in your travel time.
  • EXIT PARK FROM ORPEN GATE: From Orpen boom gate you will drive pass the Orpen petrol station (the last petrol station on route to Umlani Bushcamp) You will also pass Orpen Reception, continue to drive along the tar road. Please note that you are now travelling within the Greater Kruger which is a big 5 area, so please do not exit your vehicle until you have reached the second boom gate.
  • From the second boom gate drive 35 km to the T-junction. Turn right to the R40 towards Phalaborwa. Continue on this road for 2 km and then Turn right onto the R40 Phalaborwa / East Gate road.
  • Continue on the R40 for 17 km. Turn right at the Timbavati / East Gate sign (You will go through the Guernsy access control point) continue on this road for 18 km until you come to the Timbavati Private Game Reserve Control Gate. (Please note that you will have to pay a vehicle entry fee of R140 Cash and Credit Cards accepted) Once you have entered through the boom gate you are inside the Timbavati Reserve which is a big 5 area, please do not exit your vehicle beyond this point until you have reached our camp.
  • Follow the signs within the reserve to Umlani Bush camp. Kindly note the speed limit on the tar road is 50 kmph and on the dirt road to camp it's 35 kmph.


Umlani is renowned for their outstanding Shangaan rangers and trackers, who will not only find you the game, but will also introduce you to the wealth of flora, fauna, bird life and cultural heritage of the region.

You will be taken out on two game drives per day, in open top Land Rovers. The morning game drive will leave at dawn and the night drive will leave in the late afternoon. There is always a ranger on stand-by for an optional morning bush walk.

During the day you can go on short walks with the ranger after breakfast, or lounge in the double hammocks around the swimming pool sipping your favourite drink. Alternatively, laze away the day in our spacious bush bar and deck overlooking the riverbed and watering hole. For exclusive tranquility there is a tree house about 2.5 km from the camp overlooking a dam, where we can leave you for an hour or two with blankets and big comfortable pillows as well as a cooler box with drinks.

In the evening you will be treated to pre dinner drinks in the traditional boma around the fire, followed by one of Umlani's award winning meals in the candlelit dining room, or out in the open riverbed surrounded by flares and cauldron fires.

Child Facilities

  • Children of all ages are welcome. Children are allowed on game drives as long as they are accompanied by parents. Baby-sitting facilities and baby cots can be arranged if prior notice is given.
  • Supervision at the swimming pool must be pre-arranged as there is no fencing around the swimming pool. Children under the age of 12 are not allowed to go on a bush walk due to safety reasons.

A 50% cancellation fee on total booking cancelled within 56 days of arrival.
Full payment on confirmed bookings cancelled within 28 days of arrival or not arriving without prior arrangement.

Child Policy and Facilites
Children are welcome at Umlani Bushcamp however for their safety and to ensure the enjoyment of all our guests, we have a few regulations:-
1. Children under 12 years pay 50% of adult sharing per night rate.
2. Children under 12 years may not stay in a hut without an adult.
3. Children under 12 years are not permitted to go on Bushwalks. Our staff love children and should time allow, our Rangers or Trackers will be happy to show them items of interest such as Animal Tracks, Insects, Birds, Droppings etc within the Camp. This can be arranged at Camp.
4. Children under 5 years are not permitted on Game Drives. If staff are available to assist with Babysitting we will arrange where possible, but otherwise a parent will need to remain in Camp with child or children during Game Drive.
5. Children between 5 and 12 years will be seated on the middle seat of the GameViewer during Game Drives.
6. Parents are requested to provide their own Camp Cots for children that are too young to sleep in a bed.

OPTIONS FOR HONEYMOON COUPLES:
Upon arrival the newly weds will be greeted by a beautifully decorated bed in their room.
We offer all honeymoon couples a complimentary bottle of JC Le Roux Champagne to celebrate the start of their life together. We also include one romantic private dinner and/or private champagne breakfast during their stay. Private Dinners are set up on the bar deck under the stars or in the bar lounge on colder nights in front of the fire place. The couple will enjoy complete privacy and exclusive use of the bar and lounge for the evening.
Surrounded by dimly lit lanterns, that will ensure a romantic scene. Private breakfast will be set up next to the pool overlooking the dry riverbed under the huge Jackelberry tree.

All other meals are communal.

Private meals can be arranged upon arrival at reception or with Umlani reservations when booking your stay with us.

Honeymoon couples staying for three nights will be offered a complimentary overnight in the Umlani Tree house subject to availability and weather dependant. Please note that the Tree house may be cancelled due to any safety concerns at any time by Umlani Camp Management and therefore no bookings made prior to arrival or tree house bookings made at camp can be guaranteed.

  • Please note shuttle times before booking your flights as any transfers required outside of our shuttle times will be arranged at your own cost.
  • Complimentary Transfers are only to and from OR Tambo International Airport in Johannesburg via the Ashtons & Umlani Shuttle and to and from East Gate Airport in Hoedspruit via the Umlani Shuttle.
  • Both these transfers are included in the special and are shared with other passengers. Both Shuttles have waiting periods.

Flying to Umlani Bushcamp
Daily (scheduled) flight:

Fly-in safaris are extremely popular amongst those who don't have as much time. Flying to Umlani Bushcamp is easy as SA Express runs two daily return flights to Hoedspruit Airport from Johannesburg OR Tambo every day. For guests flying to Umlani Bushcamp from Cape Town International Airport there are direct flights six times a week (Sunday,Monday,Tuesday,Wednesday,Thursday & Friday) to Hoedspruit Airport. Flying time is 2.5 hours.

There are several air charter companies who service the area. If you would like us to help you with arrangements for flying to Umlani Bushcamp, please contact our reservations office or contact Federal Air. Our nearest landing strip is the Rock Fig airstrip, which is at the following GPS co-ordinates:

The runway is tarred and is 1000m in length. Landing fees are payable and permission must be obtained first! We can collect you from the airstrip.

Malaria
Umlani Bushcamp is a Low-risk malaria area. However, please note that we do recommend Malaria prophylaxis be taken for health reasons.

Self-Drive Safari Car Hire:
Hire cars can be collected at any airport by arrangement with relevant hire company. Approximate drive time from Johannesburg to Umlani 6-7 hours, from Mbombela (Nelspruit) (KMI) to Umlani is 2 - 3 hours, Hoedspruit to Umlani is 35 minutes.

Self-Drive - Panorama Route
Driving to Umlani Bushcamp via the Panorama Route is a scenic pleasure. A wonderful self-drive holiday route, the Panorama route encompasses Pilgrim's Rest, God's Window, Blyde River Canyon, Mac Mac Falls and other wonderful places. This trip is well worthwhile, taking in spectacular scenery as well as some quaint towns and villages. Driving to or from Umlani Bushcamp via this route adds about 3 hours onto your travelling time, but the scenery is so spectacular that it is well worth it.

Transport with Driver - Direct or via the Panorama Route
Driving to Umlani Bushcamp from Johannesburg International Airport is easy. We can arrange your transportation to the bush camp via the Panorama Route, with lunch on the way. This could also be arranged on your return from Umlani to Johannesburg.

Daily Shuttle OR Tambo/Umlani - Umlani/OR Tambo
Departure 06:30 OR Tambo to Umlani. Arrives at Timbavati gate at approximately 13:00.
Departure 11:00 Timbavati gate. Arrives at OR Tambo at approximately 18:00.
This shuttle service is operated by Ashton's Tours and can be arranged through our reservations.
